NAPO’s comparison of Akufo-Addo to Nkrumah is wrong and insulting

NAPO’s comparison of Akufo-Addo to Nkrumah is wrong and insulting

Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has criticised his New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for comparing the achievements of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with those of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Armah-Kofi Buah said the comparison made by his NPP running mate was a “misguided and derogatory insult to the legacy of Ghana’s founding father.”

In a statement on Tuesday in Kumasi, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, stated that no president, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has developed Ghana as much as President Akufo-Addo since 2017.

“Since our independence in 1957, we have never had a president who has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. From 1957 to date, I say you can bring in your Kwame Nkrumah… We have never had a president who has protected Ghana and taken the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” NAPO told a jubilant crowd.

However, the Deputy Minority Leader, in a post on his Facebook page, stated that he did not agree with NAPO’s views, saying that Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy was unique and that such comparisons were unfair and illogical.

“The attempt by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to liken Nana Addo to Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, following his uninspiring public appearances as the running mate of the failed NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is a misguided and derogatory insult to the legacy of Ghana’s founding father. Dr. Nkrumah’s unparalleled contributions to Ghana’s independence and development are undeniable and the attempt to draw comparisons with Nana Addo is unfair and illogical.

“Dr. Nkrumah’s vision, leadership and progress are unparalleled in Ghana’s history. Nkrumah’s legacy and achievements extend to all parts of Ghana and even Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s Ashanti region benefited greatly from his achievements and profound influence.”

Armah-Kofi Buah highlighted some of the projects that Ghana’s first president implemented in the Ashanti region and across the country, and questioned the audacity of NAPO in trying to denigrate Nkrumah’s legacy.

He also alleged that President Akufo-Addo was performing poorly and that this was plunging Ghana into an economic mess.

“Is Mathew Opoku Prempeh strangely suggesting that the Nana Akufo-Addo administration, which has plunged the country into economic disarray through unprecedented borrowing, debt distress, heinous corruption and ineffective leadership, is somehow superior to the transformative leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who has ushered Ghana into a new era of development and progress?

“Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana emerged as a beacon of hope and a shining star in Africa, setting an example for other nations to follow. Unfortunately, Ghana has now become a laughing stock due to the abysmal performance of the Akufo Addo-Bawumia-led government.”

He added that NAPO should publicly apologise for trying to rewrite history and belittle the contributions and achievements of Kwame Nkrumah to the development of Ghana.

“NAPO must retract its statement and apologise for its malicious attempt to rewrite history. Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy is inviolable and any attempt to bring him down will be met with fierce resistance.

“The people of Ghana will not tolerate attempts to distort the history of the country and undermine the legacy of its founding father. The immortal legacy of the African of the millennium and global icon Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah will forever be preserved and will not be allowed to be distorted and undermined.”
