New open-world game Once Human returns to mixed reviews

We all love massive open-world games, right? Exploring lands beyond our imagination and meeting a wild cast of characters is exactly what NetEase is looking for. Once upon a time a human being The studio’s new post-apocalyptic game aims to deliver as it launches globally. While players can get their hands on lucrative rewards right from the start, the game’s subpar reviews might be a sign not to bother in the first place.

With over 3,000 user reviews and counting, Once Human’s critical consensus currently sits at a solid ‘mixed’ on the Steam marketplace. The recently released open-world game draws inspiration from Lovecraftian fiction and delighted players when it first became the most-played demo at Steam Next Fest. Despite its prior goodwill, the soon-to-be free-to-play mobile game has been criticized for its privacy policy terms, lackluster character creation, and server-related issues.

The latter is to be expected when any major online action game is released, but the game’s hollow character creation suite doesn’t raise any eyebrows. According to a recent developer FAQ The issue is that Once Human’s customization is limited “due to technical limitations,” with only one character per account being created. This is absolutely disgusting, as trying out different character builds is an integral part of the best mobile RPGs.

All it takes is one look at games like the ARPG giant Warframe to see that variety is the spice of life. If you’re still looking to give Once Human a shot, regardless of your initial reaction, the good news is that NetEase has some freebies waiting for you to claim. The developer says that Once Human will offer the following outfits to pre-registered players when they log in:

  • AKM skin ‘Call of the Giant Octopus’
  • Meta’s Hat
  • A piece of furniture
  • A pair of Dragon Fist Gloves

Meanwhile, NetEase says in a recent press release that newcomers can “complete quests or invite friends to join to receive gifts including cosmetics and accessories.” However, pre-registration gifts are likely to remain exclusive to this group of players.

However, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get any goodies in the future. Be sure to check out our Once Human codes guide as more rewards are added to the game.
