Comparing Akufo-Addo’s achievements to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah: An insulting and deeply inaccurate comparison

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s attempt to liken Nana Addo to Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah after his uninspiring public appearances as the running mate of the NPP’s failed presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is a misguided and derogatory insult to the legacy of Ghana’s founding father.

Dr. Nkrumah’s unique contributions to Ghana’s independence and development are undeniable and it is unfair and illogical to try to compare him to Nana Addo.
The differences between the two leaders’ visions, influences and legacies are vast.

Dr. Nkrumah’s vision, leadership and progress are unparalleled in the history of Ghana.

Nkrumah’s legacy and achievements extend to all parts of Ghana; even Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s Ashanti region benefited greatly from his achievements and profound influence.

Some of Nkrumah’s achievements in the Ashanti region include;

  1. Establishment of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, one of the leading medical facilities in West Africa.
  2. Construction of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, one of the prestigious universities in Ghana.
  3. Expansion of Kumasi Central Market, revitalization of the regional economy.
  4. Development of the road network in the Ashanti region, strengthening transportation and connectivity, including the construction of the Kumasi-Accra highway.
  5. Establishment of Kumasi Shoe Factory and Kumasi Jute Factory.

On a national scale, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s achievements are even more remarkable.

Some of the milestones he has achieved include, but are not limited to;

  • He introduced free and compulsory primary education and established renowned universities such as the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast.
  • Korle Bu built the Teaching Hospital.
  • He established various educational and technical institutes across the country.
  • Tema Port built
  • He constructed the Accra International Airport which was later renamed Kotoka International Airport.

Is Mathew Opoku Prempeh suggesting that the Nana Akufo-Addo administration, which has plunged the country into economic turmoil with unprecedented borrowing, debt distress, heinous corruption and ineffective leadership, is somehow superior to the transformative leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who has ushered Ghana into a new era of development and progress?

Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana emerged as a beacon of hope and a shining star in Africa, setting an example for other nations.

Unfortunately, Ghana has now become a laughing stock due to the abysmal performance of the Akufo Addo-Bawumia led government.

As Minister of Energy, NAPO must recognize the importance of Kwame Nkrumah’s Akosombo Dam, a critical infrastructure project that continues to meet more than 30 percent of Ghana’s electricity needs.

NAPO should retract its statement and apologise for attempting to rewrite history.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy is inviolable and any attempt to undo it will be met with fierce resistance.

The Ghanaian people will never tolerate attempts to distort the country’s history and undermine the legacy of its founding fathers.

The immortal legacy of the African of the millennium and global icon, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, will be forever preserved and will not be allowed to be distorted and undermined.
