Argentina players score against Canada: Lionel Messi scores first goal as La Albiceleste reach Copa America finals to seek title

Messi’s second-half goal was the dagger Argentina needed to advance to the Copa America finals

Lionel Messi ended his Copa America goalscoring drought, Julian Alvarez found the back of the net as Argentina comfortably advanced to Sunday’s tournament final with a 2-0 win over Canada at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday night.

The champion put in an experienced performance against surprise semi-finalist Jesse Marsch, taking advantage of his chances and reducing his opponents’ number of shots on target to just one.

Messi had La Albiceleste’s first chance of the match, firing narrowly wide of the post from outside the penalty area. Alvarez gave Argentina the lead in the 23rd minute, scoring past the keeper after running on to Rodrigo de Paul’s pass. Messi should have doubled the lead just before half-time, but he dribbled past two Canadian defenders and sent his shot wide.

He made no such mistake after the break, deflecting Enzo Fernandez’s close-range shot into the net in the 51st minute to double the lead. Canada had their chances in the second half and made a series of dangerous attacks. However, they lost momentum when Alphonso Davies left the game with an ankle injury with 20 minutes remaining.

From there, La Albiceleste looked relatively easy, still threatening on the break and keeping Canada at bay as they cruised to their third consecutive major tournament final.
