Spain 2-1 France – Spain came from behind to beat France with a magnificent goal from Lamine Yamal and advance to the final

Lamine Yamal made history as Spain booked a place in the Euro 2024 final with a 2-1 win over France in Munich on Tuesday.

Didier Deschamps’ team took the lead early in the match when Randal Kolo Muani headed in Kylian Mbappe’s cross for France’s first goal from open play after more than nine hours of football in Germany.

Yamal, 16, became the youngest player to score a goal in the history of the European Championship when he sent the ball into the top left corner from 25 meters.

Four minutes later, Dani Olmo struck a shot towards the French goal which was stopped by Jules Kounde who headed the ball past Mike Maignan and into the net. After some debate, Olmo was later officially awarded the goal, making him joint top scorer of the tournament with three goals.

France had better opportunities in the second half, with Theo Hernandez and Mbappe firing hard from inside the penalty area.

Spain have qualified for the European Championship final for the fifth time and will face either England or the Netherlands in the final at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on Sunday, with the latter facing off in the second semi-final on Wednesday.

Talking Point – Spain returns to European Championship final

It feels like a lifetime ago since Spain last appeared in a European final – 12 years ago in fact – when they had that golden generation of Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Iniesta.

This combination of new superstar talent and experienced minds has propelled the country back to the heart of European football against all odds. Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Pedri, Rodri, Fabien Ruiz and Dani Olmo have all played key roles in Spain’s impressive European Championship campaign.

Luis de la Fuente’s side have been the most impressive in Germany this summer, scoring more goals than any other team (13). They showed their worth when they fell behind early in the match, then showed incredible character to quickly put themselves ahead.

Gareth Southgate and his England squad will be wary of the Spaniards if they are to reach the final if they can get past the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Man of the Match – Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Who else? Jude Bellingham and 17-year-old Turkish star Arda Güler were in strong competition for goal of the tournament after Yamal sent a stunning strike past veteran goalkeeper Maignan in the first half.

The youngster broke the record for the youngest player to score in European Championship history, beating Switzerland’s Johan Vonlanthen by more than 18 months.

On a historic night, the player achieved a historic success by surpassing 17-year-old Pele and becoming the youngest player to score a goal in the European Championship and World Cup at the age of 16 years and 362 days.

Yamal also became the first player to create more than six big chances in an international tournament and the player with the most big chances with 15 total.

What a wonderful summer she is having.
