Evan Russell takes Day 1 lead

Welcome to Burlington Country Club, Evan Russell.

The former Essex High School star and two-time Vermont Amateur champion moved into the lead Tuesday after the opening round of the 118th edition of the championship tournament.

Russell, who won his second consecutive BCC championship exactly 10 years ago, shot a 3-under 68 to take a two-shot lead over the trio of the 2020 Vermont Amateur champion, Russell’s older brother and the defending champion.

Evan Russell made five birdies on the day, but his eagle on the 18th hole put him atop the leaderboard with a 33 on the back nine. Garren Poirier, who won the Vermont Amateur in 2020, Travis Russell and Bryson Richards, who are looking for their third title since 2021, are tied for second after rounds of 70.

Below is the leaderboard completed on Tuesday and the Day 1 scores of the 121 golfers who finished. The three-day tournament continues on Wednesday, with the top 40, including ties, advancing to the 36-hole final on Thursday.
