Governor Green discussed his decision not to appoint a successor to the vacant Senate District 22 seat on Wednesday.

According to Green, two of the three names being fielded to replace former Sen. Maile Shimabukuro, who vacated her seat on May 31, are in active primaries for the Senate District 22.

It is my constitutional obligation to support free and fair elections, and an appointment this close to an election would have violated that responsibility. I have consulted with the Attorney General and have determined that my goal is to determine the winner of the Democratic Primary for Senate District 22 shortly after the election results are certified.

Governor Josh Green MD said in a statement

He added that the decision to wait until after the primary elections to appoint a successor was made to respect the will of the people to make appointments without any pre-emptive influence.
