Superfónicos to Release New Single ‘La Verdad’ This Friday

Austin-based Colombian Funk, Caríbe Soul band Superfónicos are proud to release their newest single, “La Verdad!” The new song, which is off their debut album, takes on a psychedelic cumbia flavor as they tell a story about a juglar (a bard) who loses his mind while searching for his lost love, implying that those considered “crazy” are often hiding the truth. “La Verdad” is set to be released on Friday, July 12th. Pre-register here.

Superfónicos have announced the release of their latest album, “Renaceré” (I Will Be Reborn), with the release of their latest single “La Verdad”, scheduled for release on July 19, 2024 via Spaceflight Records. pre-save new album here‘Renaceré’ is a profound musical journey that examines themes of rebirth, resilience and the cyclical nature of life through the lens of Colombian Roots fusion; a unique blend of sounds that owes as much to their own Colombian heritage as to Africa and the Americas.

The recording process spanned several years, starting just before the COVID-19 lockdowns and ending in early 2024. Superfónicos primarily worked at Lechehouse, which is run by GRAMMY Award-winning guitarist, producer, and engineer Beto Martinez, who captured the sounds and textures of Colombia’s Caribbean Coast region with the Gaita flute and Tambor Alegre. The band adds: “We also use Bombardino (Euphonium) on a lot of the songs. It’s often used in Colombian Cumbia arrangements, but it’s not as common in the States.” Additional recording took place at Public Hi-Fi with Jim Eno of Spoon and at Electric Deluxe with Aaron Glemboski.

On Renaceré, Superfónicos capture the essence of their experiences over the past four years. Kicking off with “El Adios,” the new album was written in 2019 by Nicolas Sanchez Castro, based on an email from his father titled El Adios and his motivation to leave Colombia in the early ’80s, reflecting the pain that still lingers almost 40 years later. In 2021, they released “Primera Luz” (First Light), a song that can relate to anyone who has emerged from a difficult situation with a new and positive outlook. “La Semilla” is a metaphor for rebirth and celebrates the wisdom passed down from our ancestors. And the title track, “Renaceré,” features a searing Afro-beat inspired by Colombia that celebrates the tenacious human spirit through life’s ups and downs. Superfonicos explains: “If we let love guide us, we never die, but are constantly reborn and, like a tree bearing fruit, we become part of the cycle that carries the seeds for the next generation. Rebirth… RE-NA-CE-RÉ!”

Superfónicos also lean into their Colombian roots while exploring a variety of rhythms on Renaceré. The Latin soul-filled song “Bogota Boogaloo” is a love letter to the beautiful and complex city of Bogota, Colombia. The song “Lunetta” combines Jamaican Dub with Colombian Porro and pays tribute to a nickname given to Nicolas’ wife in Italy.

Created during a time marked by global upheaval and personal growth, the album embodies a powerful message of renewal. Jaime Ospina (Lead Vocalist, Gaita) explains: “This record is a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit and life. We’ve all been through some tough times over the last four years, but here we are; breathing, singing, dancing and what not.” Nicolás adds: “The concept of the cycle of life and rebirth plays a major role in the theme of the record. There were many ups and downs for the band and society during this period, but in the end, like a knife forged in flames, we came out stronger.”

‘Renaceré’ is not just an album; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of Superfónicos and their journey towards a point of renewed strength and creativity despite the challenges.

To celebrate the album’s release, Superfónicos will be performing at The Continental Club in Austin, Texas on July 20 for an album release party and to celebrate Colombian Independence Day. The event promises to be an unforgettable night of music and community, marking the culmination of the band’s long and transformative journey.
