Man Utd fans say the same about Kobbie Mainoo after England win, the comparison is now irrefutable

Manchester United fans sent a clear message after Kobbie Mainoo’s “cheating” performance for England in the Euro 2024 semi-final on Wednesday night.

Kobbie Mainoo has been handed a highly anticipated call-up to the England squad ahead of the March international break following his outstanding season at Old Trafford.

Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate initially rejected the offer to call up the 19-year-old Manchester United star to the England national team but later backtracked on his decision.

Mainoo is included in Gareth Southgate’s 2024 European Championship squad alongside Luke Shaw, while Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire were unable to play for England at the tournament.

The Stockport-born midfielder struggled to get playing time in the first 11 at the European Championships in Germany this summer, with Southgate’s starting midfielder being Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Manchester United star Mainoo played briefly in the 1-0 win against Serbia in Group C, before sitting on the bench in the 1-1 draw with Denmark.

However, the English player impressed with his performance when he came off the bench against Slovenia in the last match of Group C.

Man Utd star Mainoo shines against Netherlands

Gareth Southgate replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold with Kobbie Mainoo in the starting 11 in the 2-1 win over Slovakia in the last 16.

Mainoo retained his place in the starting 11 alongside Declan Rice in the quarter-finals, with the Manchester United star showing his quality against Switzerland.

England qualified for the Euro 2024 semi-finals against the Netherlands on Wednesday night after beating Switzerland on penalties.

The Netherlands beat Turkey 2-1 in the quarter-finals to advance to the last four of the UEFA Cup.

Mainoo played alongside Arsenal star Declan Rice, while the Three Lions star put in a superb first-half performance alongside Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden.

The English player displayed the same high quality he showed at Old Trafford last season, putting in an effective performance in midfield in the Netherlands.

Mainoo was calm and composed on the ball and did not shy away from showing off his attacking talents as England pushed up the pitch against Ronald Koeman’s students.

Man Utd fans react to Mainoo’s England performance

Manchester United fans took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to heap praise on Mainoo for his superb performance against the Netherlands.

Red Devils fans have not been shy about drawing comparisons between Mainoo and Paul Scholes, with Scholes speaking highly of the United midfielder.

One fan claimed Mainoo “plays the ball like Paul Scholes in his prime”, while another said he was the best midfielder to come out of the academy since the United legend.

“Kobbie Mainoo is who he thinks he is. Just a reminder that he plays for Man United,” said one fan.

Another commented: “I really hope Mainoo is like Scholes and doesn’t want to play for anyone else but (Man) Utd.”

A third added: “Great to see Kobbie Mainoo playing like Paul Scholes in his prime, what a great time to be alive.”

A fifth person tweeted: “Mainoo is the best midfielder United have produced since Paul Scholes. There you have it.”

And a sixth claimed: “Kobbie Mainoo passes like Paul Scholes. Baller.”

Another suggested: “Paul Scholes is the only Manchester United shirt I own (but) it’s time to get a Kobbie Mainoo shirt.”

User eight X said: “Every time I watch Mainoo play I see Paul Scholes in his style and fluidity. The young buck looks like he’s been playing for 20 years. His maturity and calmness on the ball is a real joy to watch.”
