On Movie Trailers

“A trailer (also known as a preview or a feature film) is a commercial advertisement, initially for a feature film to be shown in a future theater/cinema. It is the product of a creative and technical effort…Trailers consist of a selection of shots from the movie being advertised.

Since the purpose of (this ad) is to draw the viewer into the movie, these quotes are usually shortened versions of the most exciting, funny, or otherwise noteworthy parts of the movie, usually without spoilers.

To this end, the scenes do not have to be in the order they appear in the film. (This type of commercial) must accomplish this in less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds, the maximum length allowed by the MPA. Each studio or distributor may exceed this time limit once a year if they feel it is necessary for a particular film.

There are dozens of companies in the United States that specialize in creating movie trailers, most of which are located in Los Angeles and New York City. The trailer may be created by agencies (such as The Cimarron Group, MOJO, The Ant Farm, Ben Cain, Aspect Ratio, Flyer Entertainment, Trailer Park, Buddha Jones) while the film is being cut at the studio.

Since the edited film does not exist at this point, trailer editors work from raw footage or dailies. Therefore, the trailer may contain footage that is not in the final film, or the trailer editor and film editor may use different takes of a particular shot. Another common technique is to include music in the trailer that does not appear on the film’s soundtrack.

This is almost always a requirement, as trailers and trailers are created long before a composer is hired for the film score, sometimes even as long as a year before the film’s release date, and composers are often the last creative people to work on the film.

Trailers tell a film’s story in a highly condensed way to attract maximum attention. In the decades since film marketing has become a major industry, trailers have become highly polished pieces of advertising, capable of presenting even weak films in an appealing light.

The main goal of making a trailer is to tell a compelling story that draws the audience in emotionally.

Most trailers have a three-act structure, similar to a feature film. They begin with a beginning (act 1) that establishes the premise of the story. The middle (act 2) takes the story further and usually ends with a dramatic climax.

Act 3 usually includes a strong “signature music” piece (either a recognizable song or a powerful, sweeping orchestra piece). This final act usually consists of a visual montage of the film’s powerful and emotional moments, and may also include a cast effort if there are notable stars who could help sell the film.”
