Jude Bellingham’s Ballon d’Or hopes hit big after Euro 2024 results

After a whirlwind season for Jude Bellingham, the England star and Ballon d’Or candidate could add the Euro 2024 trophy to his Champions League and La Liga honours with Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham could become one of the youngest Ballon d’Or winners in history after England qualified for the 2024 Euro final.

The Real Madrid superstar will continue his stellar club career in Spain in a history-making tournament with the Three Lions, as they face Spain in the European Championship final on Wednesday (July 10) after beating the Netherlands 2-1.

The 21-year-old player, who comes into the summer tournament with the Champions League and La Liga titles, will be able to achieve the treble if England win on Sunday (July 14).

Ahead of the European Championship, Bellingham was among the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or alongside Madrid teammates Vinicius Jr and Dani Carvajal, soon-to-be Real player Kylian Mbappe and Manchester City’s Rodri. But since Brazil’s quarter-final exit from the Copa America last week and England’s advancement to the European Championship final, the Englishman has become the favourite to win the award, with the odds suggesting a close gap between him and Vinicius Jr.

Toni Kroos, who is set to retire from football, was also a contender but fell behind after hosts Germany were knocked out of Euro 2024 by eventual finalists Spain in the quarter-finals. Mbappe’s hopes were also almost ended when France lost to Spain in the semi-finals due to a poor tournament and a broken nose.

If Bellingham is crowned the world’s best player, he will be the second youngest player to win the award. Ronaldo is currently the youngest player to win the Ballon d’Or, having been 21 years and 96 days old when he won his first Ballon d’Or. Bellingham turned 21 on June 29.

This year’s awards ceremony will take place on October 28, with nominees confirmed on September 4. For the third time in its history, the Ballon d’Or will be awarded based on the previous season’s results, rather than the calendar year, which was previously done in the winter months. For Bellingham, his form will therefore be assessed between August 1, 2023 and July 31, 2024.

If he wins, he will become the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001 and he has Ollie Watkins to thank for his winning goal against Holland that secured Gareth Southgate’s side back-to-back European Championship finals. Sunday’s victory would certainly help Bellingham’s cause.
