Littleton Independent to hold listening session for Latino community

Littleton Independent to hold listening session for Latino community

According to the latest data, about one-eighth of Littleton’s population identifies as Hispanic or Latino census data.

As part of our mission to connect, educate, and empower readers, we at the Littleton Independent believe it’s important to shine a light on diversity in our community. We want to be a trusted community resource for all residents, and we believe that starts with listening. To help achieve that goal, we’re hosting an event for the Latino community in Littleton.

On August 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., reporter Nina Joss and several of her colleagues will host a bilingual “listening session” to gather feedback and ideas to better serve the Latino community in Littleton.

The event will take place at the East Community Center, 5933 South Fairfield St.

To begin the conversation, reporters from the Littleton Independent will welcome attendees and provide a brief introduction to our newspaper and our nonprofit organization, Colorado Community Media.

Participants will then work in small groups to discuss the role of local news in their communities and brainstorm ways we can better serve them: What leaders should we recognize? What events and businesses can we highlight? What community topics are you looking for information or education on?

Small groups will be divided according to language preference and lessons for larger groups will be conducted bilingually.

In the news industry, we know it takes years of work to make information more accessible to everyone, and we know that one meeting won’t solve all the challenges. However, we believe that any good, community-centered work starts with asking questions and listening, so that’s where we start.

We hope this gathering is the first step in building relationships across our community and beginning conversations that will help us do our job better in the weeks, months, and years to come.

Feedback shared during the meeting will be used to create a guide for the Littleton Independent to improve its coverage of the Latino community.

Refreshments will be served to the entire family.
