Reston Community Center Undertakes Major Capital Projects at Hunters Woods Facility

Reduced Programming and Services
July 22 – September 6

Water Sports Venue Closed

Reston Community Center Hunters Woods (RCC HW) will undertake two major capital projects this summer. A new elevator will be installed in the nearly 50-year-old building. Additionally, a comprehensive effort will be undertaken to replace the building’s hot water and energy systems and components, resulting in energy usage improvements and cost savings. Project components include a rooftop solar module system, extensive LED lighting upgrades, replacement of hot water system boilers and pumps, and changes and upgrades to the control system. These measures will offset 260 metric tons of carbon dioxide produced by existing equipment and systems.

Scheduled programs at RCC HW will continue, albeit with occasional interruptions due to two projects. Staff has limited rentals during this period to avoid booking events or uses where interruptions would be difficult to tolerate. Camps will continue until the summer program concludes. The Terry L. Smith Aquatic Center will be closed during this period due to related systems. Typical pool maintenance in late August and early September will also occur.

Work on the elevator will be done overnight for the first few weeks to avoid demolition noise and disruption. While this adds to the cost of the project, the limited scheduling and ability to provide services during these weeks was vital to RCC and the customers served. All contractors on these projects will adhere to workplace practices designed to maintain the highest levels of safety. Employees receive extensive training in workplace safety. Fairfax County government contractors ensure that background checks and similar screenings are performed prior to beginning projects.

Parents and customers can be assured that all areas of the RCC HW affected by this work will be barricaded and secured to protect customers using the building. Annual pass holders who expire in August or later and monthly pass holders who expire in August will be provided a one-month extension. Monthly or annual passes will not be issued in July and August 2024. Anyone with questions about the projects can contact RCC at [email protected].
