CAFB Spouses Club gives back to the community

COLUMBUS, Mississippi (WCBI) – The Columbus Air Force Base Spouses Club aims to leave a lasting impression on the friendly city.

“Yes, I think it’s very important to help people in the community; you never know when you’re going to be the recipient of help,” said Brandy Womble of the CAFB Spouses Club.

This is an attempt to give back to a community that has given so much to them.

“We started this before COVID. I started working with Rhonda Sanders myself and learned about the boxes from her. We wanted to help as spouses on the base and so we started a campaign on the base and it kind of got traction and people believed in it and we decided to keep it going,” Womble said.

The nonprofit group also donates to community benefit committees and those who lost their homes due to severe weather.

“We feel it’s important to be a part of the community because we settled here. We’re not here long-term, but we are a part of the community and we want to show that we want to give back,” Womble said.

Womble said this isn’t the only place in town where people can give back to the community.

“I think there’s a total of 18, probably 21 boxes in the city. We at the spouses’ club donate $100 a month of food to a community pantry. We also support the Loaves and Fishes effort and go out and fill the boxes. We also have a pantry on base where we allow people to drop off food and pass it around,” Womble said.

The pantry section is reserved for durable and hygienic products.

Columbus resident Ashton Fears said he is grateful for the CAFB Spouses Club’s efforts.

“I think it’s a pretty great experience, especially when people in the community come in. They stock up and they feel it. You can also shop there. It’s great to stock up where you don’t need a microwave or a refrigerator. It lasts longer, especially when the power goes out,” Fears said.

Donations are accepted year-round. If you would like to donate, visit the Community Benefit Committee’s Facebook page for locations.
